In a significant announcement by the Gopikrishna Memorial Foundation, renowned Nepali literary figure Komal Prasad Pokharel has been honored with the prestigious Gopikrishna Memorial Journalism Award. The award, established in memory of journalist and writer Gopikrishna Khanal, recognizes outstanding contributions to journalism, literature, and social work.
The Gopikrishna Memorial Award, founded in 2075, is presented biennially and includes a cash prize of fifty thousand rupees. This year’s recipient, Komal Prasad Pokharel, was selected by a committee comprising Hari Narayan Bhattarai, Dr. Punyaprasad Sigdel, and Teerth Sigdel. The award ceremony took place on the 29th of Poush at Hotel Hikola Heritage in Birtamod, coinciding with the 77th birth anniversary of Gopikrishna Khanal.
About Komal Prasad Pokharel
Born in Toribari, Ilam, and currently residing in Ward No. 3 of Kankai Municipality, Pokharel has been a dedicated educator and a prominent figure in Nepali literature. His notable publications include:
The award commemorates Gopikrishna Khanal, a journalist and literary figure with four decades of contributions to Nepali journalism and literature. Khanal began his career with Baduli, a bi-monthly publication in Shilgadhi, West Bengal, India, and worked with esteemed publications such as Bibechana Monthly, Bishwadeep Semi-Weekly, and Naya Vichar.
In addition to his journalistic achievements, Khanal was an active social worker, serving as a founding member of Birta JCs, president of the Nepal Journalists Association Jhapa, and holding leadership roles in various organizations, including Sanatan Dharma Seva Samiti and Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh. Tragically, he passed away in a road accident in July 2018.

The award selection was overseen by a newly formed committee led by Manoj Khanal, the eldest son of Gopikrishna Khanal. Other key members include Saru Bhurtel Khanal as Vice-Chair, Dr. Punyaprasad Sigdel as Secretary, Bhanubhakt Khanal as Joint Secretary, and Yamanath Paudyal as Treasurer.
